So many books!
I think I must have forgotten to mention that I recently (not so recent anymore) inherited a stash of George Orwell books from my boss. Regretfully, I haven't been spending much time reading and I have too many books left untouched on my shelf. (oooh, shelf! Did I mention that I've always wanted my own book shelf ever since I knew what a book shelf was? When I finally started working and could afford one, I bought two! Haha. And they're filled to the max!) It doesn't quite help that I continue to buy books like I'm in dire need of replenishment - I don't! There's still so many I haven't read - and a good bundle of books at Zong Ren's place too!
Anyway, I very recently (few days ago) purchased yet another book. Haha. Every now and then I like to rummage through some used books store and then grab one of those relatively brainless novels. Erm, I don't mean that they're stupid or badly written; they're pretty good! But I'm referring to books that really don't require much 'additional' thinking - well at least, compared to my Murakami's and Ishiguro's. (Oh, you know, that's probably what they mean when they classify Murakami under 'Serious Fiction'! Oh crap, I sound quite bimbotic hor? Haha.)
Okay my point being, I'm so glad I bought this brainless book... "Big Night Out 3". Hehe. It's a collection of short stories (and some short recipes, tips and blurbs, even) revolving around the theme of erm... whatever you can gather from the title la. Party, romance, really dumb brainless stuff. I read the first of the series and it's pretty much the same kinda stuff. But this one is really thick! It's at least twice of the first one - which was already quite thick. And because I got it at a used books store, it was $4. Woohoo! How can I miss a steal like this?
That said, the book is not fantastic - because the tips are really redundant, although the little recipes are cute to have in a novel - and adds really well to the theme. Afterall, which other novel can boast of a special write up, plus recipe, by Jamie Oliver? I do, however, always enjoy reading some of the better writers. Marian Keyes, for example, writes really well. Although her stories are always what I term as brainless reads, it just means they are easy to read and I love how they are usually quite witty. I love the one she wrote for this book - the protaganist makes a wish for a fairytale romance and ends up with some eccentric shorties ala Snow White. The story ends really cleverly and... nice.
I've been so stressed and tired out lately - exactly the times in my life when I wanna read silly stories. :)
I wish I had some kinda school holiday - those long month-long types, where I can really rest, rejuvenate and relac one korner with my books.Labels: books
Woebegone!
Was reading a biography of Andy Warhol and it is filled with sooooo many words I don't understand! Eeeks. You know, I don't mean to be a brag, but if I can't understand that many words in a book, it's quite an abnormality. No wonder nobody wants to buy that book and Carrefour has to sale it at $3.
But it's pretty fun.
When I was a kid, I use to carry at least 2 books with me everywhere I went, and a colour pencil (or highlighter, if I could afford one) so that I could colour the words I didn't understand. Then when I got home, I would flip the dictionary for their meanings. I think it was almost like my past time.
The most colourful story books I had were always... Chinese books. Haha. I'm not exactly proud of it. But hey, I scored full marks for my first Chinese examination in Primary 1. I think I'm really quite a smart kid. I started kindergarten not knowing Mandarin at all, save for my own name - which I didn't know how to write, and completed kindergarten to score 100/100 for my first Chinese examination. It is quite a feat, don't you think? Haha.
Actually, I just think it's a God-blessed thing - my fondness for languages. Of course, I must add that I scored 100/100 for every other subject that term. I was the only one in class with that result! I'll always remember. Those were the days when I was pretty damn smart. Haha.
Not that I'm not. Chey.
So I was saying, about that book I'm reading. It's filled with so many words I can't understand that I'm tempted to pick up one of my Miffy highlighters (I bought a set of Miffy highlighters for 57 baht at Chinatown! What a steal!) and walk around with it. And even now as I type... I am planning what to do next - which includes getting out my dictionary.
You know my favourite dictionary are the ones by Collins. Webster is one of the worst. But I use them both... I don't know why I don't really touch my Oxford ones. Maybe they just have unappealing cover pages. HA HA.
I love books so much I use to dream of owning one those huge libraries in my own room. If you watched Beauty and the Beast, you might know what I mean.
All right. So I'm back to my books.
By the way, I know the title of this entry makes no sense. I just wanted to use it because I like that word. I like how it's made up of 3 words yet it's one word - which has a meaning of the three words put together. I imagine that once upon a time, they weren't supposed to be a single word but was so frequently used in way of slang that it became a legitimate word. Like how lah entered into the dictionary.

I was just telling Liwei that when I first read what Reinar wrote, I thought it sounded like Murakami. Then when I scrolled through, I realised it really was Murakami.
